With Children
10 Things That Parents Can Do To Ease
The Move
1. Get your children involved. Take them house hunting, if
possible; help them learn about the new neighborhood; and encourage them to pack at least
some of their own things.
2. Let the children help decide how their new rooms are to be
arranged and decorated. Set a date to work on their rooms with them, so they understand
that this will not be accomplished on the first day.
3. Encourage children to exchange addresses and phone numbers
with friends, so they can have the support of old friends while they make new ones.
4. Prepare a package for each child containing snacks, some
clothing, and a few favorite toys to take on the trip.
5. Try to have a place for the children to stay during
loading and unloading.
6. Have your child pack a box of her favorite things and then
decorate the outside with crayon or markers. Ask movers to load this box last and unload
it first.
7. Take a "family break" as soon as the major
unpacking is done. Spend time talking, relaxing and adjusting to the new surroundings.
8. Make the move an adventure. For example, if you'll be in
the new house before your belongings, tell your kids you'll have a chance to "camp
out" in the living room.
9. Realize that your children will take their cues from you.
If you seem stressed out, so will they. Stay as relaxed and flexible as possible, and
realize the unexpected always happens.
10. Report any serious abnormalities that linger more than a
few days -- loss of appetite, insomnia, constipation, diarrhea, etc. -- to a doctor.
